This section provides information on project descriptions and publications detailing the best available environmental technology in Germany today. The projects published by Cleaner Production Germany are mainly national case studies on environmental protection which has been integrated into the production process. These projects are sponsored by Germany’s national and regional ministries, Länder-level agencies, or foundations with a governmental mandate. They include, for example, in-depth descriptions of large-scale projects sponsored and verified by Germany’s Environment Ministry (BMU) and Federal Environment Agency (UBA) which demonstrate new ways of avoiding environmental pollution or reducing it significantly. The German Ministry of Education and Research also publishes the results of its research into innovative technologies to protect the environment here.

The section is rounded off by publications (final project reports and research papers) for download and information regarding statutory regulations and specialist events.

This project indicates how to locate an optimal site for the treatment of abrasive sludge – whether a centralised, decentralised or mobile plant configuration should be considered, and how the internal transport of abrasive sludge should be done. Expand…
Using vacuum oil removal, drying and briquetting, abrasive sludge can be processed into an oil-free solid that blends negligibly with other recyclable materials and exhibits high strength. Recycling this solid into production processes leads to environmentally friendly and efficient material cycles. Expand…
Simulation calculations have been used to develop a standardised method for the calibration and validation of the DIC-SBR process. These calculations have formed the basis of targeted analyses for the further reduction of discharge values and operating costs. Expand…
The low frequency emission of the vacuum pump-extraction system of 2 paper machines was to reduce durably by the application of silencers with new developed membrane absorbers of fine steel, so that an emission gauge of <35 dB(A) could be kept in the night in emission regions situated more than 1 km away. Without silencers, exceedings of this limit were caused by the low frequency tonal components in the third-octave spectrum of 80 Hz. The installed membrane absorber silencers are indifferent to pollution and reconciled with the low frequencies. After 4 years application in paper machine 1 and 1 year in paper machine 3 their effectiveness has been proved. As the damping was more than 15 dB in the third-octave spectrum of 80 Hz, the sound emission could be reduced to below 26 dB(A) at 80 Hz in more than 0.7 km remote emission regions (further information in German). An analysis of the wooden window frame market was carried out. Based on this analysis, a directory was compiled containing economic data and technical reference figures, as well as the optimisation potential for material flow, production times, workpiece design and the layout for wooden window frame production.

The Institute for Solar Energy Systems - ISE supports the industry by improving collectors and equipment components. The research projects and developed products cover noncorrosive collectors for seawater desalination, extremely solid systems, pollution-free coating processes, as well as front-integrated collectors. For agriculture and trade process heat from solarthermal large-scale installations becomes increasingly attractive. The projects and products of this research and development field can be accessed via the market range thermal solar plants.
On the basis of waste analyses, a procedure for the separation and treatment of substantially non-recyclable plastic wastes was developed in order to use the resulting product as alternative fuel in cement works. Expand…
It was possible to realise an incineration process for the non-polluting incineration of plastic wastes. This thermal utilization saves landfill space and improves CO2 levels. It is possible to save fossil fuels and maintain the quality of the product thereby. Expand…
The objective was to reduce the dump rate from 25 percent to 8 percent. In order to obtain the objective it is necessary to separate the chromite sand from the silica sand. The purity for both kinds of sand must be > 99 percent. In addition, part of the sand, previously cleaned from chromite, is to be thermal treated, to obtain reclaimed sand resembling new sand with ignition loss < 0,1 percent. The given objective has been achieved with this pilot project. Expand…
A demonstration plant to illustrate the utilization of regenerative energy sources in a manner that appeals to young people was installed in a youth center. It is expected that this will lead to a dissemination of the knowledge about how to operate solar plants to the near environment as well as international visitors. System monitoring and data collection are ensured and available at the computer to visitors for demonstration purposes. A continuously updated illustrated chart graphically depicts the data of the system (detail information in German).
