This section provides information on project descriptions and publications detailing the best available environmental technology in Germany today. The projects published by Cleaner Production Germany are mainly national case studies on environmental protection which has been integrated into the production process. These projects are sponsored by Germany’s national and regional ministries, Länder-level agencies, or foundations with a governmental mandate. They include, for example, in-depth descriptions of large-scale projects sponsored and verified by Germany’s Environment Ministry (BMU) and Federal Environment Agency (UBA) which demonstrate new ways of avoiding environmental pollution or reducing it significantly. The German Ministry of Education and Research also publishes the results of its research into innovative technologies to protect the environment here.

The section is rounded off by publications (final project reports and research papers) for download and information regarding statutory regulations and specialist events.

The waste water loaded heavily by the waste water from the Textilfaerbereien is biologically cleaned and subsequently treated by means of a combined application of activated carbon adsorption, chemical precipitation/flocculation and filtration (AFF procedure). By the parallel operation of a submersed and a fixed bed plant according to the alternating denitrification procedure the transferability of this N-elimination procedure to the fixed bed technology was examined. Also, the suspensa elimination performance as well as the observance of effluent values for filterable materials were compared in both procedures. The procedure of the alternating denitrification could be installed with satisfying results on the fixed bed plant. The ammonium degradation was heavily affected by the suitable procedure, in particular the correct combination of inlet quantities and duration of phase times (detailed information in German).
Using the technology mentioned above the purification efficiency concerning organic waste load and nitrogen does in no way lack behind that of modern large-sized sewage treatment plants. The goal of the project was the optimization of the denitrification by feeding waste water into deeper soil layers at Subterra plants. The measurements showed an average degradation of the waste water components by 96%. Further, the testing of various substrates for an improvement of the habitat of the micro organisms was successfully accomplished.
Since the activated carbon treatment, particularly with DCE and VC cases of damage, exhibits some serious disadvantages, the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial and Bio Process Engineering – IGB has developed a procedure for the biological reorganization of these cases of damage. The VCH are subject to a cometabolic degradation, which leads to the complete mineralization. Ethylene, which is analogous in structure to chloroethylenes, is used as auxiliary substrate (growth substrate).
This German-language article describes in four chapters research activity concerning the perfect agricultural crop. This crop should survive with little water, resist cold and warm temperatures without loss of yield, independently fight off pests without having to be treated with pesticides and survive in salty soil.
Air injection wells have been developed as a means of optimising the cost of hydraulic decontamination measures. In tests conducted using limited groundwater flows with low pollutant concentrations, air injection wells have performed both effectively and economically for the removal of volatile chlorinated hydrocarbon-based contamination. The open, air dehumidifying and cooling system developed and tested under the project uses a concentrated salt solution as a fluid sorption medium. The new sorption technology with low-flow absorbers makes it possible to store air-conditioning energy efficiently and without losses.

The newly developed and certified algae test represents a low-cost, automated system with which to assess the likelihood of novel substances and soil and water samples posing an environmental hazard. This well plate based test reduces the number of samples required by a factor of 500.
This study involved the evaluation of various disposal options in terms of their environment-friendliness, cost-effectiveness and state-of-the-art technology for each method considered.
