Building Remediation

The following measures are taken to renovate an old building in order to render it more energy-efficient: General installation of insulation, use of a new transparent insulating compound system, use of new triple glazing (k=0.4 W/m²K), and installation of a flat collector. This has reduced the specific energy consumption from approx. 250 kWh/(m²a) (energy reference area 750 m²) to 54 kWh/(m² a). This represents an energy savings of almost 80%. The annual efficiency of the heat generated by the gas heat value system including solar-heated warm water generation amounted to approx. 88% (detail information in German).
The developed process engineering shall be particularly suitable for the reorganization of surface-contaminated construction units (secondary sources), whose load developed due to pollutant releases from primary sources (e.g. splices) into the room air and from there into the construction units. During the pilot reorganization of a PCB contaminated school building the new plant technology had proven effective and functional and thus represents an alternative to the degassing procedure used up to then.

There are many activities of the Länder, local authorities or energy agencies which consider particularly the energy saving possibilities at schools. Investigations showed that the energy consumption can be lowered by more than 75 %, the largest saving effect being obtained by the insulation of the external walls. The fundamental procedure is described at the example of a school in Stuttgart.
The goal of the applied research project of the "Ruhr University Bochum" is the development of prototypes of an economic, energy-saving external wall redevelopment system for old buildings, which can be applied quickly and without scaffold, in order to avoid the problems connected with the usual redevelopment technology (high costs, long construction period, disturbances). The project is promoted with Federal Funds by the agency responsible for the project Jülich PTJ.
In order to reduce the high radon concentration in the room air of residential buildings above mining drivings (uranium mining industry) model redevelopment methods were tested. At individual objects building-design and ventilation procedures were accomplished. The combination of sealing measures and maintenance of underpressure underneath the building or in the floor structure was particularly effective. Besides, it was examined by experiment whether a purposeful mine ventilation may lead to a wide radon redevelopment.

The European Union comprises a huge, historically important heritage. Special requirements have to be fulfilled during refurbishment or renovation of monument-protected buildings. In Germany the Project Management Organisation for Biology, Energy and Ecology (BEO) aims at convincing owners by means of workshops to take advantage of energy efficient measures in order to save energy and to reduce costs.
