Germany is not only one of the leading nations in the environmental technologies sector, but also in the field of innovative energy technologies. That the standard here is high is clear from the fact that the Federal Republic only has two percentage points to go before reaching its climate protection goal, a reduction in greenhouse gases of 21 percent over the base year 1990 by 2010. But cutting-edge technology from Germany is also contributing abroad to the protection of the world's climate, where it enjoys an excellent reputation.

In addition to the rational conversion of energy in fossil power plants, the use of renewable energies enjoys a growing status both in Germany itself and for the export market. The Federal government aims to double the proportion of renewable energies which contribute to the generation of electricity in Germany to 12.5 % on 2000 by the year 2010. Already today around a third of the world's wind-generated electricity comes from Germany. State-of-the-art technologies are drawn on for the transportation and storage of energies just as they are in the generation of electricity, heat and other energy sources. Climate change, however, cannot be mitigated by technical innovations alone. Modern energy services and management systems are also applied at home and abroad.

Absorption refrigeration units are an environmentally friendly way of providing air conditioning. Conventional tube absorbers were replaced by new, polymer membrane modules in order to reduce the cost of investment, their sensitivity to agitation, and the size of the absorber.
An integrated data base located at the webpage of “Druckluft-e-market” helps to search for company addresses of important producers. It is possible to search for companies by name, town and/ or postal code.
The association of German refrigeration and air conditioning technologies specialist firms offers a database about German companies from this line of business. The search is possible for postcode or name of the company. Another possibility is to search for a specialization as commercialand industrial or transport refrigeration.
The open, air dehumidifying and cooling system developed and tested under the project uses a concentrated salt solution as a fluid sorption medium. The new sorption technology with low-flow absorbers makes it possible to store air-conditioning energy efficiently and without losses.
An energy analysis showed that electricity consumption can be lowered if waste heat from the compressor is used to heat the baths in the purifying units. Expand…
An analysis of energy flows resulted in the recommendation that a geothermal heat pump system be used to cool and heat the shop floor and production machines as a means of reducing primary energy consumption. Expand…

The feasibility of storing energy for heat and cooling in aquifers was examined as part of the energy concept for the Berlin Reichstag pilot project, and the efficacy of the system confirmed by the first operating results.
The Association of German Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Contractors represents its members with regard to governmental and public authorities and organisations. It looks after the relevant economic interests of its members throughout the industry, and in addition provides a wide range of services such as legal advice, advertising and marketing, as well as providing information and organising events.
This cogeneration project with a total capacity of 26 MW aims at the expanded use of the by-product “bagasse” obtained in the manufacture of sugar. It is planned to utilize waste products as fuel from the own production site but also from another sugar cane mill. The project will provide the steam and the electricity needed for the sugar production including adjoining houses. The surplus is feeded into the national network. The project is viewed as exemplary test for future CDM projects.
Research projects, particularly those related to energy efficiency and the development of renewable energies, must be supported to effect a drastic reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. This German-language brochure serves as an introduction to the projects promoted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and their integration into existing and planned activities at institutionally supported research organisations.
