Power Engineering

Germany is not only one of the leading nations in the environmental technologies sector, but also in the field of innovative energy technologies. That the standard here is high is clear from the fact that the Federal Republic only has two percentage points to go before reaching its climate protection goal, a reduction in greenhouse gases of 21 percent over the base year 1990 by 2010. But cutting-edge technology from Germany is also contributing abroad to the protection of the world's climate, where it enjoys an excellent reputation.
In addition to the rational conversion of energy in fossil power plants, the use of renewable energies enjoys a growing status both in Germany itself and for the export market. The Federal government aims to double the proportion of renewable energies which contribute to the generation of electricity in Germany to 12.5 % on 2000 by the year 2010. Already today around a third of the world's wind-generated electricity comes from Germany. State-of-the-art technologies are drawn on for the transportation and storage of energies just as they are in the generation of electricity, heat and other energy sources. Climate change, however, cannot be mitigated by technical innovations alone. Modern energy services and management systems are also applied at home and abroad.
