Source materials for this component system are natural fibres and secondary fibres recovered from scrap carpet. The resulting structures are lighter than those produced by conventional methods, are fully competitive in terms of their mechanical properties, and show advantages in both economic and ecological terms. The German language brochure contains information on a process for the recycling of detergents and water in laundries which involves the biodegradation of contaminants in waste water and the recovery of active cleaning surfactants. By this method, fresh water consumption and waste water production can be reduced by up to 90%.

The texturing and stretch-winding processes used in the production of filament yarns were optimised by means of interlacing technology, so that the yarns are created with an adequate finish to be used as warp or weft threads during the weaving process, while only requiring a small amount of sizing agent. A selective reaction water degradation process in the fumigation chamber, additional sealing measures, the spatial and chronological integration of emitting process steps, as well as the comprehensive documentation of the process parameters resulted in the reduction of ammonia in the inhaled air, outgoing air, and wastewater. A concentration method was developed to lower the level of organic phosphor in wastewater. Emission during the transport of the treated textile was eliminated through the spatial and chronological integration of the further processing with the ammonia fumigation (detail information in German).

The developed technical innovations, which have been tested under actual conditions of use, can be applied in washing roads, mechanical escapements, driers, mangling machines and clothing distribution centres. This optimisation of the mechanical process has made it possible to considerably reduce the environmental pollution emitted by laundries and at the ame time to extend the useful life of textile products. The German language brochure contains information on an interdisciplinary research project for the conservation of resources in the washing of medical textiles from hospitals and retirement homes. Disinfectants based upon peroxy acids generate an antibacterial effect even at low temperatures. The use of these disinfectants produces a 40% saving in energy required for washing, and significantly extends the lifetime of textiles.

This reference document on best available techniques in the tannery industry reflects an information exchange carried out according to article 16(2) of Council Directive 96/61/EC. The types of hides and skins are restricted to those of ovine and bovine origin, because the production capacities for any other types of raw material for the production of leather and furs are below the threshold value (12 tonnes or finished products per day) in the directive.
This report is the German contribution for the Reference Document on Best Available Techniques for the Textile Industry, worked out due article 16.2 of the European IPPC Bureau IVU rule.
It covers the whole textile production process. In Chapter 1 general informations concerning the Textile Industry are summarized. Used Production Techniques and current Input and Emission data are reported in Chapter 2 and 3. In the Chapters 4 to 6 you can find a report on techniques for the BAT-Process.
Until now, the pre-treatment of textiles has been carried out using large quantities of chemicals and textile additives. The newly developed plasma technique can replace part of the wet chemistry with a 'dry', low-energy procedure. In addition, it has become clear that plasma treatment can also be employed in the field of textile coating and laminating. Expand…
The project partners developed a system for measuring and controlling temperature so as to reduce material consumption, shorten process times and ensure consistent product quality for melting and casting units in the metal and glass industries. The application of this innovative measurement and control technology offers environmental benefits by improving resource and energy efficiency. Expand…
