Analysis of energy and material flows in the coating of paper

An analysis of the energy and material flows identified potential for optimisation in the reduction of solvent emissions and the relevant energy consumption. 



Schupp Musterkarten GmbH manufactures colour cards, whereby a variety of media (emulsion, nitrocellulose lacquer, wood stain, wood varnish and plaster) are applied to a paper or paper-backed veneer base by application, roller application, pneumatic varnishing, or by hand with a trowel.


Objectives of the project 

  • To achieve transparency regarding operating energy and material flows, particularly in the coating of paper
  • To draw up a solvents balance for the year 2004 and a reduction plan preparing ways of complying with the 31st German Immission Control Act (BlmSchV)
  • To prepare a specifications sheet for the treatment of waste air containing solvents
  • To research and evaluate technical options for the treatment of waste air containing solvents
  • To draw up an economic comparison (estimation) of different ways of treating waste air containing solvents (cost of investment and operation)

The evaluations focused particularly on solvent emissions where the 31st BlmSchV is concerned. 



  • The analysis of operating energy flows identified optimisation potential in the region of EUR 5,000 to EUR 10,000
  • Discussion with the coating suppliers revealed that the type of coating system rich in solids necessary for compliance with the reduction plan is not available now nor will be in the near future  
  • The waste air generated by the coating of paper will not have to be purified under the 31st BlmSchV until more than 5t per annum of solvents are exploited
  • The concentration of solvents in the waste air is determined by the technical scope of the waste air purification system; the figures and fluctuations should be re-assessed before the specifications sheet is drawn up
  • A first evaluation of possible methods of purifying the waste air shows that there are considerable differences in the annual cost 
  • It was recommended that a holistic approach be taken in the selection of a suitable technology, i.e. an evaluation of the energy and material flows together with a comprehensive analysis of economic viability
  • Reduced energy needs could save tens of thousands of euros each year and at the same time lower environmental pollution
