Metal-coating pastes: experience-based optimisation, testing and qualification of solvent-free, water-dilutable metal-coating pastes

The application of water-dilutable thick-film pastes is advantageous on both ecological and economic grounds. During the term of this project, paste systems for the metal coating of mono- and multi-layer substrates have been developed, together with an active solder paste and a paste series for the production of membrane electrodes for fuel cells.

 

Summary

To date, organic solvents have generally been used for the removal of conventional thick-film pastes from screens and pressure nozzles.  A part from the fact that, in some cases, the use of these agents is questionable on ecological grounds, cleaning with water would be considerably cheaper.

In a forerunner to this project it was possible to demonstrate by example that, in principle, the production of water-dilutable thick-film pastes is feasible, thereby allowing equipment and screens to be cleaned using water.

On the basis of these findings, the present research project was intended to allow the development of further water-dilutable paste systems using water-soluble binders which would have comparable properties to existing commercial and non-water-soluble systems.  To this end, a purification and recycling concept was to be developed which would be suitable for transposition from the laboratory to a technically feasible industrial process.

Results:

  • A water-dilutable paste system comprising conductive, resistor and covering pastes has been developed for the metal coating of AlN substrates.
  • For multi-layer applications, a ceramic film paste system has been developed which shows comparable properties to conventional pastes.
  • Further pastes have been developed and successfully tested for active soldering applications and for the production of membrane electrodes for use in the construction of solid oxide fuel cells.
  • Purification and recycling concepts have been developed for all the systems described.
