Assistance system for the maintenance of wind turbines

The aim of the project is to develop data glasses as an assistance system for service technicians of wind turbines. The data glasses should make it easier to locate the plant components, provide access to information and document the work carried out.



The increasing number of wind turbines and the associated services challenge the wind energy industry. Due to the increasing scope of maintenance activities and the resulting documentation obligations, there is a need to support the service staff. Therefore BIBA has developed an Augmented Reality (AR) based assistance system for work in wind turbines together with the partners AnyMotion and COMback.

The project was divided into the areas of navigation, work instructions and documentation.  The main challenges were indoor navigation, visualisation, recording and delivery of maintenance instructions and activities, recognition of object markers and management of the large amounts of data.

The "AR Maintenance System" expands reality and takes over essential documentation tasks by visually presenting information on the maintenance process through semi-transparent 3D data glasses. This results in more efficient processing of orders, increased safety and easier, more secure documentation and archiving of maintenance data. The system thus also creates the basis for the automated recording and maintenance of the product life cycle documentation of a wind turbine.
