Groundwater Remediation

Highly crosslinked biopolymers for heavy metal deposition

In closed opencast brown coal mining areas, metallic components (iron salts and iron hydroxide) can occur in surface waters. If the groundwater rises, these are flushed out and can cause problems in drinking water production due to the high iron and sulfate content. In the project, highly crosslinked biopolymers based on glucan-chitin complexes for iron adsorption and heavy metal separation are developed.
