Environmentally friendly photopolymerized coatings with improved application characteristics

The highly-reactive, low-viscosity UV-coating developed for metal base surfaces fulfils the corrosion protection requirements of the automobile industry, and has good recycling qualities. Its mechanical properties have been optimised such that, notwithstanding its hardness and scratch-resistance, it shows sufficient elasticity and ductility for application to metal base surfaces.

Summary

UV curing (i.e. photopolymerization) of coating materials shows considerable advantages both from economic and ecological point of view. On the other hand, significant technological limitations existed. The research & development work of the co-operation project considered here had the following objectives to extend the possible applications:

  • UV curable lacquers and corresponding vehicles with excellent adherence on metal,
  • low-viscous UV curable lacquers and corresponding binders for hot-spray application,
  • fundamental investigations into the properties and limitations of formulation ingredients and of measuring and testing methods,
  • UV curable lacquers and corresponding vehicles with high corrosion protection and chemical resistance,
  • UV curable lacquers and corresponding binders with high weathering resistance and low tendency to yellowing,
  • UV curable coating materials with high elasticity and sufficient deformation behaviour,
  • adjustment of the degree of gloss, obtainment of matting effects,
  • highly reactive UV curable lacquers and corresponding vehicles aiming for possible “inline coating steps” in timed production processes,
  • development and adjustment of corresponding application and curing technology including process control and quality assurance,
  • comparison tests, scale-up, check of reproducibility and stability, investigation into the recycling behaviour.

Essentially, the objectives mentioned above have been achieved.
