Energy efficient outside wall reconstruction using industrial prefabrication methods

The aim of this research project at the Ruhr University Bochum is to develop prototypes of a cost-effective energy efficient outside wall reconstruction system for old buildings, which can be applied quickly and without scaffolding. This enables the problems associated with current standard reconstruction techniques (high costs, long construction time, faults) to be avoided.



A significant proportion of Germany's building stock has outdated insulation technology, which is why there is huge energy saving potential in modernisation of old building façades.  Previous reticence to adopt these measures among building owners was based partly on the high investment costs and lengthy building work, with the associated restriction on building use.

The aim of the research project is to develop an innovative concept for energy efficient reconstruction of old buildings using large component insulation technology, which meets the criteria for highly effective heat insulation with low wall thickness, cost-effective factory production regardless of weather, as well as fast, stable and uncomplicated assembly.

All of the required operations - from analysis and assessment of the building fabric to measurement and design of the components through to transportation and attachment - were studied both theoretically and practically.


  • A stable, 7-layer sandwich insulating element with an outer plaster layer was constructed.
  • A detailed workflow of the required operations was created.
  • Further automation of the TOTAL measuring system (tachymetric object-oriented semi-automated laser measurement) was achieved.
  • Punctiform and rail fastening technologies were developed and optimised.
  • Exterior walls with areas above 60 m2 are the most common façade types, present at around 70 % of the locations studied.
  • In most cases, insulating elements with integrated openings were chosen.
  • With a height between floors of 2.80 m, insulating elements with a length of 5.0 m and more can be used.
  • Mounting in a scaffold frame means that the insulating element is not exposed to any excessive loads during transportation and assembly.
