Development optimized extraction facilities and control organs for the optimisation of large-scale dedusting plants

Improvements to the dedusting system of an oxygen steel plant achieved have thus far mainly been based on changes in the converter extraction technology and the pig iron transfer pit, as well as on dynamic analyses of the emission processes with the corresponding adaptation of the extraction capacities and processes. 

Summary

In the oxygen steel plant in question, transferring pig iron from the torpedo cars to the pig iron ladles, filling pig iron into and draining steel from the converters as well as subsequent steel processing at the various stations result in emissions that are not fully extracted by the currently installed extraction systems for secondary dedusting. The converters and the transfer pit on the west side were identified as the critical sources of emissions.

The aim of the project was to optimise the associated system extraction facilities without having to put in place an expensive extension of the ventilator and filter systems. The aim was rather to achieve optimisation by improving the operating method and optimising the hood design.

Results:

  • The measurements, analyses and experiments carried out have shown that the dedusting system of the oxygen steel plant can be optimised with regard to pollutant extraction, while at the same time saving energy. These improvements have on the one hand resulted from improvements in the extraction technology developed for the two critical emission sources - the converter and the pig iron transfer pit - with the aid of model investigations and numerical simulations, and on the other hand from the dynamic analyses of the emission processes and a corresponding adaptation of the extraction capacities and processes.
  • In addition, further potential savings were identified in the form of water injection into the extractor hood area, which is at times subject to high temperatures, thus saving future extraction volumes and therefore energy.
