Involvement of a specialised firm from the process chemical sector for the reconstruction of existing electroplating equipment

Through the minimisation of material losses, it is possible for operators in the surface treatment industry to reconcile ecological considerations with commercial advantages. The resulting conflict of interests between the operators of electroplating installations and specialised producers of process chemicals can be resolved through new forms of cooperation and settlement in respect of services provided.

Summary

Through the minimisation of material losses, it is possible for operators in the surface treatment industry to reconcile considerations of environment-friendliness with commercial advantages, specifically in terms of process reliability and quality assurance.  However, in a system where operations are divided between the operators of surface treatment installations and specialised producers of process chemicals, a conflict of interests will arise, in that the economic advantages which can be achieved will primarily benefit the former.

The object of this project was the development of new forms of cooperation between specialised producers of process chemicals and the operators of electroplating installations, in order to allow this conflict of interests to be resolved.

Results:

In the course of analyses undertaken, three new models for cooperation and the billing of services have been developed, and a detailed set of guidelines has been prepared:

  • The separation of chemical products from technical services takes account of the fact that the introduction of measures for the reduction of material losses will reduce the consumption of chemicals, while the demand for services will increase significantly.
  • Invoicing on the basis of process indicators will allow specialised chemical producers to share in the benefits of savings in consumption, through the definition and financial evaluation of criteria for success.
  • Through chemical management, the specialised producer will be more closely involved in overall process organisation as a service provider.  This system provides for the invoicing of a flat-rate monthly payment.
