Metallising pastes (Phase 2): Practice-oriented optimisation, trial and qualification of solvent-free, water-soluble metallising pastes (Part 1)

Several water-soluble paste systems were developed, all of which had considerable advantages vs. standard pastes, especially with regard to the parameters energy, global warming potential and hazardous waste. Acceptable screen cleaning results could be achieved using these water-soluble pastes. 

Summary

Screen printing is predominately used in the manufacture of circuitry for the electronics industry. Up to now, organic solvents have been used for all steps in the cleaning process.

Overall aim of the project was to develop an integrated ecological concept. This was to cover the entire spectrum, from the manufacture of ceramic foil and metallising pastes right through to an environmentally compatible method of cleaning equipment and plant, using water. The cleaning concept to be developed should be realised from laboratory scale to industrial scale production within a reasonable cost frame. Using paste of type FK1205W as an example, the previous project phase has already demonstrated that it is possible in principle to develop water-soluble thick-layer pastes and subsequently to clean the equipment and screens with water.

Based on these results, the current project set out to develop further water-soluble paste systems based on water-soluble binders. These should have similar characteristics to the commercial systems (non-water-soluble) currently available on the market.

Results:

The following were successfully developed: 

  • A paste system, consisting of conductivity paste, resistor paste and masking paste to metallise water-soluble AIN substrates with PVP binders.
  • An LTCC multi-layer paste system (viapaste, inner layer paste, top layer paste).
  • water-soluble paste set for producing MEAs to assemble solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC).

 Screen cleaning tests using these water-soluble pastes were conducted with satisfactory results.
