Insulating materials of wood: Pneumatic processing of wood chippings and wood fibres to provide insulating material

Wood chippings can be transported using a pneumatic process and used as insulating layers for partitions. This concept for material handling on the construction site involves the filling of the processing machine with chippings from bulk containers. One person only is needed to set-up and operate the equipment.

Summary

Insulation of buildings increases the sense of wellbeing in the rooms and at the same time reduces the energy required for heating. Not only can the wood chippings created during wood processing be used as effective insulation, but the carbon dioxide in the wood is prevented from being released into the atmosphere over the medium term at least while the chippings are suitably recycled.

As part of a complex collaborative venture, the following aspects were investigated in this subproject:

  • the development of pneumatic processing procedures,
  • online material quantity measurement using a microwave principle and
  • concepts for insulating material utilisation on construction sites.

 Results:

  • Wood chippings can be readily distributed into partition sections for construction purposes by means of a pneumatic system. A high air flow rate is required for the material transport. It proved possible to develop an air blower system for single plank walls which provided for dust-free utilisation of the wood chippings with adequate ventilation.
  • In addition, a prototype of a device for the processing of wood chippings was developed. Its main features are its horizontal and vertical feed modes for insulating materials, as well as its lightweight structure.
  • The microwave sensor in use was too inaccurate for the determination of mass flow.
  • A coherent concept for material handling on construction sites was created. This makes it possible to fill the processing machine with chippings from bulk containers. The equipment required can be assembled and operated by a single person.
