Processing and anaerobic digestion of municipal waste

In several plants in the laboratory and/or technical school scale the fermentability of a remainder garbage fraction freed from inert material was examined, whereby different operating points considered. A reduction of the organic material of up to 63% was reached. In comparison with the fermentation behavior of other organic residual substances such as bio garbage or sewage sludge it becomes clear that the degradation rate of the organic substrate is the higher the more easily degradable substances are contained in this substrate. In a two-stage plant the degradation degree could be further increased. Core piece of this plant is the filtration unit which serves for the concentration of the substrate which was not diminished in the first stage (Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial and Bio Process Engineering – IGB).
