Investigations into the use of secondary treatment by membrane filtration in municipal sewage processing under highly variable influent conditions

As part of the extension of a municipal sewage treatment plant, three membrane installations have been incorporated into the existing aeration tanks and operated on a trial basis for 15 months. Flat-plate and hollow fibre membranes have proved to be reliable. In terms of carbon, nitrogen and phosphate degradation, the conversion of materials achieved has been comparable to that of conventional aeration installations.
